The Unweaned Pig Supper (TUPS)

-
TUPS now takes place on the last Friday in October each year back at the George & Dragon, 2 High Street, Much Wenlock, Shropshire TF13 6AA
The George & Dragon dates back to 1714. Pub Dog keeps the ‘Spirits’ Up. While you are enjoying your visit at the George and Dragon, keep your wits about you for a ‘cold stroking’ against your leg, as the pub dog who haunts the building from being locked in the cellar many years ago, still haunts the floors looking for the love a young maid gave him while he was locked there by the nasty landlord…or the caring stroke from anyone else who may feed him ‘spirits’.
The inaugural meeting of TUPS was held at the George and Dragon in coronation year. At the time of the coronation, the national press had publicised the prodigious appetite of Queen Salote of Tonga, a lady of comely proportions, who was said to exist on a diet of suckling pig. This obviously became a talking point at the George, and the original pig supper developed soon afterwardsGeoff Mountford, a current member, attended some of these early sessions.
The club is limited to 25 members. If you miss two consecutive meetings you are no longer a member. The club is held in such high renown that a member once flew back from Venezuela so as not to miss TUPS.
TUPS, as we know it now, was revived in 1974.
TUPS for 2023 is 27 October
